ANNUAL PROGRAMS

1) FINUS Annual Benefit
An annual benefit will be held for FINUS supporters, members, directors and staff. At this event funds will be raised, the annual report will be delivered and the direction for the year will be expressed.

2) 2010 FINUS-HIAP RESIDENCY PROGRAM [click here for details]
The Finland-US Cultural Alliance (FINUS) is partnering with the Helsinki Artists in Residency Program (HIAP) to create an Artist Exchange and Residency Program between Washington D.C. and Helsinki.

In the first phase of this program, one artist who resides in the District of Columbia will be selected to travel to Helsinki for a one-month paid residency. During the residency the artist selected will be expected to:

  • Create an original piece of work while in Helsinki
  • Collaborate with a Finnish artist when possible
  • Actively participate in the arts and cultural scene while in Helsinki
  • Develop and implement an educational component to complement his/her work. This is key component of the program and all proposals are expected to have a strong educational/knowledge sharing component.
  • Document their creative activities a journal* for presentation in Washington DC

3) FINUS Capital Exchange Expo
The FINUS Capital Exchange Expo will provide a venue for the competing artists that do not win the FINUS Capital Artist Exchange residency to showcase their works in Washington DC or Helsinki. Though minimal in scope, this expo will provide additional avenues for the exposure of the artist's work internationally.

 

SPECIAL PROGRAMS 2010

FINUS/88 Media Arts Symposium (2009/2010)
Partners: David Fogel [88] and Pekka Hako [Embassy of Finland - Washington DC]
FINUS 88 is a media arts symposium and performance series. Created to showcase the emerging artists in the field of electronic arts from Finland and the United States. The symposium offers exciting performances from musicians, performance, and video artists as well as compelling lectures and master classes on the artists creative process.

FINUS/88 was developed by FINUS: Finland US Cultural Alliance and 88 space, organizations both interested in the development and promotion of Finnish artists in the US and US artists in Finland.

FINUS Film Series
Partner: John Hanshaw [Washington DC FIlm Institute]
FINUS Film Series is a one day event dedicated to the presentation of short films by Finnish and American filmmakers. The FINUS Film Series is a collaborative project between the Washington DC Film Institute and FINUS: Finland US Cultural Alliance.
Currently scheduled for 2nd quarter 2010, this film series has the potential to run concurrently in Helsinki and Washington DC

Design Week - Helsinki / DC
Partners: Sarah M. Aburdene & Mattew Esposito [Design Week, Washington DC]
Design Week - Helsinki/DC is a collaborative bi-city design experience attached to the design week of both Helsinki and DC. The purpose of this collaborative experience will be to showcase design and media projects from each city in the alternate city's design week. The bi-cultural event(s) would not only design enhance the cultural capital of both design weeks (Helsinki & DC) but also allow for expanded marketing and economic development for each city. The program will include a series of educational events such as workshops, lectures, seminars open to the public in design shops, galleries and other institutions. An integral element of this collaborative project would be a video project that features interviews with designers, design shop visits and projects from both design weeks.
